The IRS has generously given you until April 17th to complete your taxes this year, so your only concern for April 15th should be to send your best haiku, senryu, haiga and haibun to SxSE for consideration.*
Submission guidelines and both the email and snail mail addresses to send them to are on the right, under "About South by Southeast". Thank you -- as always we look forward to reading your work!

Editors' choices for issue 19:1
The deadline for our next issue is coming up on April 15th. For some inspiration, here are the Editors' Choices from the last issue:
garbage night --
i hesitate
with the moon
-- Tyrone McDonald
yellow leaf dangling from the snowman's lip
-- Bill Cooper
SHARK TOOTH
dark clouds scudding by --
a giant squid vanishes
with a sucking sound
the old whaler laid to rest
his hands on a scrimshaw cross
an ancient shark tooth
100 miles from the sea --
wind ripples the grass
a mermaid tattoo
on the young tree planter's calf --
the sound of reggae
again the falconer scans
the empty horizon
the day care pirate
slashes with a toy cudgel --
afternoon stories
-- by Allan Burns and Ron Moss

Issue #19:1 is hitting mailboxes
Our new issue is just out -- the first issue of South by Southeast's 19th year. We current editors have only been on board for 12 of those years, but it's still hard to believe we've been at it for that long. Thanks for all of your support, with both subscriptions and submissions.

Editors' Choices
At deadline time at South by Southeast, there are six of us who read through the submissions and give our opinions about what to publish in the upcoming issue. Although we've shared, workshopped, and debated haiku for years, it's rare that we all agree. In the "Editors' Choices" section of each issue we feature several haiku and senryu that we most agreed on.
Here are the four poems featured as Editors' Choices in the latest issue (Vol.18, No.1):
spring breeze a spider line floats in morning sun
- Lee Giesecke
winter clouds
the walnut tree's
reaching hand
- Lee Giesecke
first frost
on both sides
of the fallen leaf
- Gretchen Graft Batz
homeless men
shopping for sleep
on Black Friday
- Patricia Carragon
Our next deadline is coming up in a few weeks: April 15th. As you're preparing for Tax Day, don't forget to stop, breathe, and send us a few of your best haiku. (For those of you not in the U.S., please happily disregard the taxes part...)
